Qualcomm announced on Tuesday (30) the launch of a new generation of chips for smartwatches, the Snapdragon 4100 family. With them the company promises better performance, less battery consumption and more resources even when the watches are in “ambient mode ”To save energy.

According to Qualcomm, the Snadragon 4100 has CPU performance 85% higher than the previous model, the Snapdragon 3100. The GPU is 2,5 times faster, and cameras up to 16 MP are supported. All with 25% longer battery life and 4G connectivity, thanks to an integrated modem.

But the main change is an “Always On” (AON, always on) coprocessor, which will allow watches to record steps and monitor heartbeat, among other features, even when in energy-saving mode. This is important, as according to Qualcomm a typical clock spends 95% of the time in this mode, which previously only allowed to show the time on the screen.

Two processors will be launched: the 4100+, with AON coprocessor, and the 4100, without this feature. The first watches based on the new platform will be launched by Chinese manufacturers Xiaotiancai, which will make a smartwatch for children, and Mobvoi.
