O Google Meet started receiving this Friday (30th) the function of customizing background images in video calls. The appeal is expected since August, when the Google announced future service innovations. In a statement, the company mentions that it is possible to use "handpicked images", such as "offices, landscapes and abstract backgrounds". On the other hand, the user will also be able to upload his own images.

The images that should make up the background of a video call at Meet, however, are only available in the browser Chrome (Windows e Mac). Initially, the feature will also be available on the Chrome OS. The company said that "support for Meet's mobile apps will be available soon", but without citing any dates.

To change the background during a video call, the user simply clicks on the background icon and then on the “change background image” button. It is not necessary to install any plug-ins external to the browser, nor download any files to use the novelty.

The novelty is also part of Google’s effort to implement novelties also seen in competitors such as the Zoom. In September, the function of blur the background calls. Later, the Meet brought to users of Android e iOS the function of active noise cancellation.

Google also informs that students - attending meetings organized by educational clients - will not be able to select their own background image. The feature starts to be launched today for users and customers of Essentials, Business (Starter, Standard and Plus), Enterprise (Essentials, Standard, for Education and Plus) plans, and personal accounts (or from non-profit organizations) .

In the third quarter of the year, Meet recorded more than 7,5 billion daily minutes of video calls. The largest number of active participants in daily meetings in the period was 235 million.
