The material joins another batch already released from the IFA, which should arrive in São Paulo this Wednesday (3). There are 5,4 thousand liters, which should be transformed in 8,6 million doses of the vaccine and will be filled by Butantan. In total, the two batches are expected to provide 17,3 million doses, which should be filled at a rate of 600 thousand bottles per day, with completion scheduled for March.

The first phase of the Butantan agreement with Sinovac foresees 46 million doses of CoronaVac. The first 6 million were delivered ready-made from China and have already been delivered to the Ministry of Health. The other 40 million are filled by Butantan with IFAs that come from China.

CoronaVac has already received authorization from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) for the emergency use of another 4,8 million doses filled by Butantan. With the new IFAs already confirmed, the total of doses projected to be released to the Ministry of Health exceeds 28 million.

Another batch of 8 thousand liters of IFA is already under negotiation, which will be important to complete the 46 million foreseen in the first phase. There is still no forecast for the release of this consignment, but Butantan hopes to be able to deliver all the doses expected by April.

The institute also negotiates with the Ministry of Health over 54 million doses of CoronaVac, referring to the second part of the agreement with Sinovac. The agreement has not yet been signed, but the director of Butantan, Dimas Covas, confirmed that he had received an expression of interest.

Considering that CoronaVac foresees two applications per person to awaken immunity against Covid-19, the projected volume so far will be sufficient to immunize 25% of the national population. As of the second half, Butantan is expected to complete the transfer of technology and be able to produce the vaccine locally, without depending on receipt of the IFA from China, but still without a concrete forecast.
