The US basketball star and gold medalist at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, Kyrie Irving will not be able to play or train with the Brooklyn Nets team as she does not share her vaccination status. Immunization is mandatory for participation in public events in the New York City.

Irving is allowed to continue carrying out activities at the team's premises and, theoretically, could continue training and even playing in away games. However, for the general manager of the franchise, Sean Marks, it is not viable to have an athlete “working only part time".

Vaccination is a "private matter"

Kyrie Irving plays point guard and is one of the top NBA players. At 29, the athlete has already won a league title in the 2015/2016 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Iving did not confirm whether or not he took the vaccine against Covid-19, according to him, this topic is private.

However, the league said the vaccination requirements to follow the games in New York and San Francisco also extended to players. With that, athletes from New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors would have to get vaccinated to play.

In a press release, Marks said Kyrie Irving's choice was personal and that the franchise respected her "individual right to choose." However, this choice restricted their full-time participation in the team and no team member would be allowed to work part-time.

Although Irving is one of the best players on the team, for Marks, his absence does nothing to change the Brooklyn Nets' goals this season. The team is considered one of the strongest in the NBA and one of the big favorites for the title.

The NBA season begins next Tuesday (19), the Brooklyn Nets debut against defending champions, the Milwaukee Bucks, in a rerun of last season's Eastern Conference finals.
